About Los Alamos Located at approximatley 7355 feet, Los Alamos is a small mountain community of 18,000 people, surrounded by national forests, national parks and pueblo land. It is just 35 miles outside of Santa Fe and 90 miles north of Albuquerque.
The area was once home for the Anasazi Native Americans and then the site of the Los Alamos Ranch school from 1918-1943. Los Alamos had earned a significant place in history as a site for the Manhattan Project during WWII, assisting in the development of the first atomic bomb. Currently, Los Alamos is widely known as the home to present day Los Alamos National Laboratory.
With LANL being the community's largest employer and drawing workers from around the world, Los Alamos boasts a very diverse and highly educated population that possesses a world-wide reputation for scientific and technological development.
